The Design Guide magazine
Client: Straightup Productions
Project: magazine editing
Graphic designer: Friends of Design
Over a period of five years, Andrea edited The Design Guide magazine. Developing themes, commissioning stories, we looked after the quality, copyediting and proofreading of the biannual.
This architectural journal investigated a different theme each issue. It surveyed Pacific Rim as well as UK architecture, as a point of difference to the two existing New Zealand residential architecture magazines. With a greater variety of projects to choose from, we were able to explore architecture and design themes in some depth. The structure of the magazine was based on a range of story types and lengths to suit general browsing and a more in-depth read. We worked with many renowned practices, such as Strachan Group Architects (Auckland), John Wardle Architects (Melbourne), Richard Murphy (Edinburgh), Wutopia Lab (Shanghai), Henning Stummel (London), Barbara Bestor (LA), and many more. Images from top photographers and insightful copy made every page a delight. Andrea Stevens was the editor for issues one through to ten.
Excerpt:
‘Architects generally add colour through materiality: mostly natural colours derived from timber, stone and metal. For this issue of The Design Guide, we were interested in projects that use bold colour in architectural ways. Houses and apartments with colour baked into materials, such as brick, steel, plaster or tiles. Interiors where colour drives the spatial experience. Examples of colour defining form and scale.’
